I have been in broadcasting in one form or another for almost 20 years. I started with BBC Monitoring, based at Caversham Park in Reading, England, where I worked at their intake department gathering news feeds from shortwave and satellite for translation and re-broadcast on the BBC World Service, as well as for distribution to the British Foreign Office and the US Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS)..I then moved to the United States where I worked for Globecast as a technical operator at their teleport in Staten Island, New York. This job entailed broadcasting occasional program distribution and news packages via satellite as well as fulltime uplinks for ABC, USA Networks and Lifetime Television. In 2005 I joind The Switch as an operator and by 2009 had worked my way up to Operations Supervisor. The Switch was founded in 1991 in New York City to provide broadcasters, studios, post-production facilities and transmission service providers with the industry’s first customer controlled local video routing solution. After being embraced by the New York broadcast community, The Switch expanded its operations to Los Angeles, Washington D.C. and Miami; eventually connecting these cities as well via its Inter-City On Demand “ICOD” network. Since then the network has expanded greatly and at the time of writing The Switch now has a total number of Switch locations throughout the US and the United Kingdom to 33 cities.My job is to ensure the smooth running of the control room whilst supervising 3 operators and liasing with customers to ensure the highest quality control. I also interface with telco companies (Verizon, AT&T), harware vendors (Miranda, Nevion) and software vendors (Scheduleall) to troubleshoot issues with anything related to operations.
