I grew up and was educated in Derry, Northern Ireland and left there to go the University of Stirling. By the time I graduated in 1984 with a B.A in Film and Media Studies I had nearly four years’ experience of working for the university’s MacRobert Arts Centre, this meant that my wish to work in theatre management became a realistic option, and I enjoyed 10 years of this experience at a very high level culminating in my being the Theatre Manager and Licensee of the King’s Theatre in Glasgow. I was previously Head of Creative Arts. Media & Design and then Head of Beauty, Sport & Performing Arts for Motherwell College; these roles came after a career change I made after discovering I was passionate about education and educational management. In my capacity as Theatre Manager of the King’s Theatre, Glasgow, I was invited to advise an Industrial Consultative Committee on the writing and delivery of a HND in Arts Management at Motherwell College. This led to a switch to my subsequent career in Further Education.Since initially graduating I have returned to Stirling and obtained post graduate certificates in both Teaching in Further Education and The Management of Tertiary Education; in 2007 I completed a Master’s in Education with Distinction. I augmented my post with on-going secondments to the HMIe as an Associate Assessor and to the University of Stirling itself as a Teacher Fellow in the now Faculty of Social Sciences. I have also co-ordinated an international college project as Director:Kuwait. On November 1st 2013, Motherwell College joined with Cumbernauld College as the newly formed New College Lanarkshire. Coatbridge College joined this organisation on April 1st 2014. I was appointed as a Head of Faculty on 1st May 2014, leading Supported Learning and Extended Learning Support across all of New College Lanarkshire's Campuses.In 2019 Guidance, Learner Engagement and the Student Association were added to my remit.On the 2nd of November 2020 I took up an 8 month secondment to support the College’s preparation and planning for our next Education Scotland review cycle in particular in relation to the additional requirements for ES due to Covid-19.My role as a Policy and Research Manager at SQA afforded me the luxury of another lens on Scottish Tertiary Education, focusing on Articulation.I am delighted to return to the University of Stirling as a Adult Education Lecturer on the TQFE programme.
