I have founded the Applied Computational Neuroscience (ACN) research group and led the group full-time until June 2024. Since July 2024, I still lead the group part-time and supervise Ph.D. and M.D. (Dr. med.) students. We focus on neurotechnology and algorithmic approaches that aim to predict disease trajectories in mental health and neurology. We develop protocols for brain-computer interfaces (neurofeedback training) and explore the clinical potential of mobile and digital health tools in mental health.

My PhD focused on clinical applications of real-time fMRI neurofeedback training in Depression, as well as for motor rehabilitation (stroke and Parkinson's disease). Besides depression, I am also interested in motor rehabilitation. Simultaneous EEG-fMRI in motor neurofeedback training.

The project involved the calibration of a new 3DOF robotic manipulandum, a pilot study to characterize natural movements of participants, and studies on learning mechanisms (use-dependent learning and reinforcement learning). We were able to show that the motor system is sensitive to its output variability and can optimize joint-space solutions that minimize task-relevant output variability. We also discuss applications for stroke motor rehabilitation.

Assisted in the data acquisition and analysis of a series of Magnetencephalography (MEG) studies about neurogenic dysphagia, working with stroke, multiple system atrophy, and Parkinson's disease patients.

This internship was on brain systems of associative learning processes supervised by Prof Peter Holland. The project involved a behavioural study on Pavlonian-instrumental transfer in rats and immunohistological processing of brain slices to determine the expression levels of immediate early genes as a marker of neuroplasticity.
