About David Meth

I am a storyteller, novelist, award-winning playwright, and non-fiction author who writes about people caught between cultures. I have extensive experience writing personal and professional statements, essays, and letters that change lives and policies, including immigration, medical & legal issues, and much more. I am an educator with many years of experience. My drama has been produced nationally & internationally, most recently in Kyiv. My play 9/12 won the 2008 Peace Writing International Award. I received an Artistic Fellowship from the State of Connecticut in 2009 and 2024 for my play, TO THE DEATH OF MY OWN FAMILY. There has rarely been a performance or reading when members of the audience were not brought to tears, even in India where we did a tour playing to standing room only and standing ovations in houses from 250 to 1500 seats. I started a playwriting program at an alternative high school which was the only safe place for many of the students who had been thrown out of school or their homes because their parents addicts, alcoholics, or incarcerated. My play, ARTY'S POOLROOM, a 60's period piece that takes place in a legendary Brooklyn poolroom, was an O'Neill finalist. My next play, FACES, challenges the ethics of killing abroad, as America polices the world with our military and our morality. My first novel, A HINT OF LIGHT, about a half-black, half-Korean boy abandoned to the streets of Seoul, was published in 2010 to 5-star reviews on Amazon and published in South Korea to 5-star reviews. It is based on 3 years of research in South Korea, Japan, and the U.S. where I interviewed many of these children and the people who took care of them. My 2nd book is EVERY DAY IS A GIFT: Surviving Cancer and Making Peace with the Past as the basis for writing workshops for cancer patients, survivors, family and friends that has had remarkable success. WHEN SHADOWS SCREAM, an urban fantasy is with agents, as is WHEN IT RAINS IN INDIA, my first children's picture book. I finished my third novel, THE TICKET, about a Saudi Arabian Princess who gets a parking ticket from a Jewish cop from Brooklyn that causes a class and culture conflict politically and across borders and oceans, resulting in anarchy in the streets that shuts down New York City. My next non-fiction book is about language usurping law. Specialties: Speech writing, professional and personal statements, and client rehearsals for speaking engagements. Workshops for essay writing, compelling dramatic narratives, fiction and speaking engagements and cancer survivors.

In addition to being a novelist, playwright, poet, and non-fiction writer, I have worked with many clients to create compelling professional and personal narratives and to prepare them for speeches and presentations in the best possible light professionally. As a former literary agent many years ago, I brought in work from Asia at a time when publishers said there is no market for Asian and Asian-American books. I represented African-American authors when publishers were not coy about repeating the same refrain over and over again: "Blacks don't read." Of course, American society and culture continues to evolve while politics never ceases to devolve and threaten us with fascism. Therefore, many thanks to superb boundary breaking editor Michael Denneny, and friend, founder and publisher of Soho Books, the late Juris Jurjevics. You have made this change possible and contributed so greatly! We must also be grateful to PEN and writers and journalists, without whom we would not have our democracy or country.
