Conduct Court-Ordered Competency to Proceed Evaluations

Conduct clinical intake Evaluations and Therapy within sub-acute rehab hospital units, as well as long term care units.

Developed team of inpatient Psychologists and behavioral specialists rendering comprehensive assessment and treatment within a maximum security forensic inpatient facility for adult males and females. Supported assessment and treatment of mentally ill sex offenders on an inpatient unit, while engaged in setting hospital-wide standards for risk assessments by Psychologists. Also developed a team of Psychologists to conduct Competency to proceed and Sanity evaluations in the county jails, prisons and other facilities upon court order. Conducted specialized training and clinical supervision in forensic evaluations requiring neuropsychological, personality and specialized forensic psychological testing and interview procedures. Conducted clinical evaluations of residents in the center and in county jails for Competency to proceed, as well as individual therapy on an inpatient basis. Consulted with state and center Administrators as part of the clinical executive team, in regard to program development, QI, and determination of individual risk and readiness for transfer to a less restrictive setting. Served as a member of the NJ Forensic Work Group modifying forms of court orders and process, while consulting with state division lawyers on problematic cases. Starting with only 3 Psychologists on inpatient units and 2 Psychologists conducting county jail evaluations, a full team of 27 individuals were employed under one united Department of Psychology by 3-1-2018.

Private practice conducting both psychotherapy and comprehensive assessments of an adult and geriatric population. Individual therapy with adults presenting diverse clinical symptoms and personality disorders. Interventions were evidence based and designed to resolve specific symptoms and maladaptive adjustment, utilizing an eclectic, multi-modal approach with emphasis on cognitive and interpersonal therapies. Majority of practice pertained to personality and neuropsychological testing by referral from Psychiatry, Neurology and or Geriatric medicine. Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations were conducted with patients presenting histories of head trauma, post neurosurgical interventions and other neuropathology complicated by psychological syndromes. Significant number of assessments conducted for dementia. Therapy follow-up associated with test feedback, cognitive and familial adaptation. Certified by Hampton Psychiatric Hospital and Burlington Memorial Hospital, conducted inpatient consultation services with cognitive and psychological assessment for differential diagnosis and treatment planning. Certified by The Geriatric Assessment Center in Mt. Holly for neuropsychological assessment of dementia issues for clinical treatment or as part of a research project.

Engaged in comprehensive clinical assessments of residents with apparent psychological symptoms with criminal charges and or significant behavioral disturbance. Transferred upon civil commitment or court order from state psychiatric hospitals, prisons and county jails. Assessments entailed personality, neuropsychological, specialized forensic testing and interview procedures. As a member of a clinical team, attended all clinical team contacts and treatment plans with residents. Conducted individual therapy with residents, presenting diverse presenting problems, though a common issue pertained to denial and avoidance of actual legal circumstances. Assisted Director of Psychology in recruitment and clinical training of Psychologists, as well as serving on clinical administrative committees and helping to develop referral and treatment processes for the Department of Psychology.

Assigned to an inpatient admissions unit, serving as a member of a clinical team. Attended all team contacts and treatment plans. Conducted cognitive and personality assessments, including annual risk evaluations of patients declared Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity. Served as clinical intern supervisor for psychological assessment.

Assigned to the Incompetency to Proceed (IST) inpatient unit, served on a clinical team requiring evaluation and treatment of residents court ordered for assessment as to current capacity to participate meaningfully in their court case, or to conduct treatment to restore competency to proceed. Some residents were found Not Guilty by reason of Insanity, presenting a variety of issues in treatment and consideration of risk for transfer. Conducted assessment, group and individual therapy. Served as Director of the Internship program for Pre-Doctoral Psychology interns, serving as a supervisor and offering seminars, as well as organizing the training program for future accreditation.

Served in the Short Term Admissions Unit as a member of the clinical team, conducting psycho diagnostic interviews on admission. Conducted cognitive and psychological Assessments, entailing personality and neuropsychological testing with clinical interview procedures. Conducted individual and group psychotherapy with inpatient residents. Served as supervisor for Pre-Doctoral interns in Clinical Psychology, conducting a variety of seminars in assessment.

Conducted cognitive and personality assessments for admissions to the adult and adolescent inpatient units. Conducted group and individual therapy with residents, as well as serving as the clinical team leader for the adult inpatient unit. Involved with training interns.

Served as a member of Mecklenburg county Mental Health Emergency Services. Clients in acute emotional distress presented at the center through telephone calls, walk-ins, referrals and accompanied by police. Psycho-diagnostic screenings were conducted to ascertain nature and level of distress, determining type of treatment needed with implementation of immediate psychiatric hospitalization within the center’s inpatient units or self-initiation of short-term crisis-oriented outpatient therapy. Also conducted mobile emergency mental health assessments at residences within the city of Charlotte, assisted by police. Otherwise conducted assessments in emergency rooms of local medical hospitals. Regularly served after hours on call duty for all county mental health emergency situations from 10 PM to 8 AM.
