About David Mikhail

I am a mechanical engineer who's incredibly lucky to do something they are passionate about. I shared car enthusiasm with my dad, and what made me the most excited about cars were the stories of the challenges engineers would have to solve and design around. From that moment, the question that always came up was, "How does that work?" whether it be cars, bikes, planes, and everything else going up or down the complexity scale. As a mechanical engineering undergraduate at the University of California Riverside, I continued to explore engineering and feed my passion across a wide range of experiences ranging from student org to independent research and prototyping in the Bionics Systems Lab to interning at Cummins Inc. and working with large teams and communicating between different teams and machinists. I learned hard skills like CAD Design, MATLAB and Arduino coding, and FEA analysis. I also learned soft skills like communication, teamwork, and keeping records of project progress to share what I learned with others in the organization. I am currently looking to start my next chapter as a professional in Mechanical Engineering.

David Mikhail Work Experience Details
  • University Of California, Riverside
    Undergraduate Research Assistant
University Of California, Riverside Jun 2022 - Dec 2023
    Riverside, California, United States
    ● Created a mathematical model of spring-like properties of soft actuators to investigate potential use to actively dissipatetremors so patients can lead a more comfortable and independent life.● Examined different control modes, which can actively or passively dissipate tremors, by performing a simulation of multiplecontrol states with Matlab and improved attenuation performance by 25%.● Built six soft twisting pneumatic actuators to use in testing and prototyping.
  • University Of California, Riverside
Unmanned Aerial Systems: Ground Vehicle Lead/ Chassis And Suspension Team Member
University Of California, Riverside Sep 2021 - Feb 2023
    Riverside, Ca
    ● Facilitated communication between 3 sub-teams by guiding them through the design process and establishing concrete parameters to remain within to ensure that all systems of the Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) work harmoniously together.● Optimized durability and efficiency of design through SolidWorks FEA analysis, optimizing joint strength, frame robustness for rough drops, energy utilization, and payload space.● 3D print and source parts that provide sufficient strength and appropriate weight to develop prototypes that can fit within the parameters of the competition rules and the UAV bay area.● Collaborated with four sub-teams to integrate a lowering, winch, and release mechanism into the UGV chassis without compromising the packaging space inside.
  • Cummins Inc.
    Laboratory Operations Intern
    Cummins Inc. Jun 2023 - Sep 2023
    Columbus, Indiana, United States
    ● Created and verified new fuel injector needle testing standards, including a Gage R&R study for reliability, cutting machine costs by $100,000 globally. Established correlation between new and old values for direct comparison.● Redesigned a Lovejoy L-type coupling spider to replicate field failures under realistic conditions, allowing for play within the coupling, preventing abrupt impacts, and accelerating the testing timeline by three months.● Conducted Dimensional Variation Analysis to investigate and resolve a critical leakage issue occurring within the Fueling and Performance Testing Rig while validating its performance.● Performed rigorous dimensional inspections on Rig components to verify that all elements meet print specifications.● Generated CAD models and assemblies from existing GD&T detailed drawings of test tooling with CREO Parametric.
  • Sorenson Engineering Inc.
    Engineering Intern
Sorenson Engineering Inc. Feb 2019 - Sep 2019
    Yucaipa, California, United States
    ● Calibrated and programmed optical gauging and measuring equipment to measure high-precision parts for aerospace and telecommunications.● Pioneered a custom-made, DCS quality control software trial; and integrating the new software into the existing quality control infrastructure to streamline the process and increase efficiency.● Inspected part quality using optical gauging machines and microscopes to support daily production.
