Learner Support Worker

Brighton, England, United Kingdom

St John’s is a college supporting young adults with learning difficulties. My main responsibilities at St John’s were to support Learners with all aspects of their personal and academic wellbeing, specialising in sport. As part of my job it was my responsibility to assist and support learners with their education, building and developing work and life skills, and assist them with communication. The learner’s wellbeing is at the forefront of all tasks that I undertook and I worked as part of a team to deliver holistic person-centred care. This ranged from personal care, to encouraging independence and building on skills that promoted a healthy wellbeing. This was a very physically demanding job and I was required to fully engage throughout the day with the learners and my colleagues. As part of my role I was expected to be computer literate and operate an email system and various filing and reporting systems that enable me to fully support a learner. I was a key worker to specific learners and was expected to reflect this in writing on a day-to-day basis.

Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant

Sion-Manning / All Saints Catholic College

London, England, United Kingdom

As a teaching assistant at Sion-Manning I supported three students within the SEN department. A large proportion of the support was carried out in the classroom itself, unless the students were participating in an intervention. The students had various disabilities, from Global Development Delay, Autism and Mosaic Down Syndrome. My role consisted of ensuring that the students were well supported in line with their Statement/EHCP and their needs and ambitions were met sensitively, as well as providing overall support in their education. I also planned and created resources to assist the students’ learning. Furthermore, I took communication skills and social skills lessons with the students as part of a learning intervention. In addition, I completed Talking Mats Training, which is SALT based CPD, I assessed the student’s progress as much as possible, as well as using the PIVATs assessment to outline their aims and targets. I also researched new interventions and strategies that could be used in the department.

I worked with 5 children aged 8 years – 18 years. I built a strong positive relationship with service users, which in turn helped them to gain confidence.
