I have led WRAP's collaborative work with businesses, including our three voluntary agreements: The UK Plastics Pact (focused on packaging), Courtauld Commitment 2030 (in the food & drink sector) and the Textiles 2030 Commitment. These agreements convene the UK's leading businesses, trade associations, Governments and other stakeholders to change the way we supply and consume products around the product life-cycle. Head Of Food SustainabilityWaste & Resources Action Programme Mar 2014 - Mar 2018I led WRAP’s work with the food & drink sector on Food Sustainability. In 2016 we launched the Courtauld Commitment 2025: a new ten-year, farm-to-fork, voluntary agreement to help the UK tackle the longer-term challenges to food security, sustainability and industry competitiveness. We secured over 100 signatories at launch, including all the major UK food & drink retailers, leading brands and manufacturers, local authority organisations representing over 40% of the UK population, major trade associations and the four UK Governments.

Head Of Products And ServicesWaste & Resources Action Programme Jan 2011 - Mar 2014I led WRAP’s Products & Services Programme, working with industry and Government to reduce the environmental impact of the UK's consumption of clothing, electrical and DIY products, across the whole product life-cycle. Successes included:- The Sustainable Clothing Action Plan 2020 Commitment to reduce the carbon, water and waste footprints of UK clothing. This was launched in 2013 with early sign-up by 40% of the clothing retail sector.- Sector agreement in 2013 by the leading DIY retailers and builders' merchants on widespread water efficiency labelling of bathroom products.- I was lead author of the WRAP publication "Valuing our Clothes" in 2012, and co-author of “Switched on to Value” in 2013. Both publications set out the case for sector action to benefit consumers, businesses and the environment.

Programme Manager, ConstructionWaste & Resources Action Programme Apr 2006 - Dec 2010I developed a programme to build demand from construction clients for waste reduction and re-use, to help drive the UK construction sector commitment on halving waste to landfill (2008-2012). By embedding requirements in the procurement specification for over £40bn of public and private sector projects, including London 2012, we changed sector practice. The commitment gained over 500 signatories, including Governments and many of the major property developers and contractors.

Programme Manager, ProcurementWaste & Resources Action Programme Apr 2003 - Mar 2006I set up WRAP's programme on procurement, to increase demand for the use of recycled material. Outcomes included Government requirements for minimum levels of recycled content in their procurement specifications for construction materials and copier and publications paper.

Managing Consultant And Team LeaderAea Technology Apr 1993 - Mar 2003OxfordshireI led a team delivering consultancy services to Government and the private sector on reducing the environmental impacts of transport. I personally led a number of multi-partner international projects, including software modelling of the future impacts of the European transport system, and online dissemination of the key findings from the European Commission's Transport Research Programme. I doubled our consultancy turnover in four years.From 2001-2003, I worked on secondment at the UK Department for Trade and Industry, managing the Innovation & Growth Team for the Environmental Goods & Services Sector. This involved recruiting and working with 70 senior decision-makers from industry and Government to identify actions to increase sector competitiveness. -
Programme Manager For Corporate ResearchAea Technology Apr 1989 - Mar 1993OxfordshireWorking with AEA's Chief Scientist, I provided the corporate-level management of AEA's internal R&D programme. Our major objective was to change the programme to focus on commercial outcomes, in preparation for the stock market flotation of AEA Technology in 1996. We secured approval for the new programme from the UK Monopolies and Mergers Commission and the Government's Advisory Council on Science and Technology. I also gained my MBA degree (with Distinction) by part-time study at London Business School during this period. -
Research Scientist And Research ManagerUk Atomic Energy Authority Sep 1982 - Mar 1989OxfordshireI delivered a research programme on protecting metals from oxidation at high temperature, which contributed to my Doctorate from Oxford University. I also developed a state-of-the-art ultra-high vacuum facility for surface analysis at high spatial resolution, and provided micro-analytical services to commercial clients. I authored or co-authored 19 publications.
