Since its establishment in 2016 as an informal network, the Irish Ocean Literacy Network (IOLN) has brought together like-minded individuals and organisations who passionately believe in the importance of the seas and oceans to the island of Ireland and its citizens. The aim of the network is to try to improve coordination, collaboration, and capacity building of the island's “Ocean Citizens” community to help achieve a common vision – an Ocean Literate Society across the Island of Ireland. In December 2023 IOLN was set up as a Company Limited by Guarantee (CLG) as it was felt that a legal not-for-profit structure was necessary to support the network to evolve and professionalise in order to maximise its impact.“An ocean literate citizen understands the importance of the ocean to humankind; can communicate about the ocean in a meaningful way and is able to make informed and responsible decisions regarding the ocean and its resources.”

The Foundation’s establishment is a planned output of the €10m EU LIFE Integrated Project “Peatlands and People” (2021-27). The foundation is a social enterprise created to fulfil the vision of a National Climate House and Encounter Experience co-located on an eco-designed site in Ireland's midlands. It will be both a world class venue and a flagship initiative for an integrated approach to sustainable living, supporting behavioural change across society for the preservation of our common futures.
