After getting my BS in civil engineering I worked briefly for the US Arrmy Corp of Engineers and then in private industry for over a dozen years. I got my masters degree along the way. My full time industry experience moved me through general civil design, leading design teams, opening and running the consulting firm's first branch office, and project management for an owner and developer of retail centers. I quit work as a professional engineer to get my PhD at MIT, where I had one foot in civil engineering and the other in the Sloan School of Management. After graduation I joined the University of Bergen (Norway) to help start a new graduate program in system dynamics. Four and a half years later I accepted a faculty position in the Construction Engineering and Management group at Texas A&M, where I am now. I am also an adjunct faculty member (research) at the US Naval Postgraduate School. I am currently active in research, teaching, and consulting of sustainability, risk management using managerial real options, development project dynamics, construction management, management of professional services firms, engineering and public policy, military acquisition, and the system dynamics modeling methodology.
