Personal StatementAs an Engineer that has proven to be adaptable from heavy Mining Engineering through Frozen food to Confectionery I believe there is much more to be achieved with British Manufacturing through the implementation of cultural changes in the working environment such as TPM, the implementation of Autonomous maintenance within operations type roles not only improves reliability of equipment but instills ownership, higher efficiencies, eliminates breakdowns, higher output, reduced costs and not least of all improves moral at work which in itself, improves all the afore mentioned even further.“Cleaning is the first line on any maintenance process” – a clean machine will always perform better!My role with Unilever was a major influence in my career and outlook as an Engineer; it was during this time and training in the tools and techniques of TPM Philosophy that I came to believe that Engineering and Maintenance was not just for apprentice trained engineers but that everyone had a role to play, from cleaners through operators to senior managers, all had a role to influence performance of equipment and hence improvement.The key to this process for me is the driving force from the shop floor people to the support influence of the management for that process.Prior to the Introduction of TPM within Unilever at Hull the average line efficiency was 45%, after the 5 year program the efficiency was achieving 85% on a regular basis “World Class Manufacturing Standards”
