She was single and had paid off her home, her car and all debt, and was wondering if her now $190k, down from $275k, was still enough to retire on? Unfortunately, she never met with me to discuss her aggressive portfolio allocation just prior to retirement (1996-99), consequently the market volatility took a toll on her portfolio. Fortunately for her, we were able to create an acceptable budget, and along with her social security benefits we were able to create a sustainable income she could live with. She was happy to know she could finally retire! I realized at that time, it does not take $1 million to retire and that most plan participants were not millionaires, but similar to this plan participant. Almost everyday I answer the same question, "when can I retire?" I also realized that my biggest benefit to my client retirement plans is helping the plan participant retire with dignity, on their timeframe.
