Independent Mechanical Engineering Consultant
I provided engineering services on the design (Solidoworks) and manufacturing (injection molding and SLA 3D Printing) of a novel medical device, its packaging, and the system's assembly. I coordinated with the pharma and engineering teams as well as outside stake holders to identify pathways and opportunities in the design process. I utilized an in-house SLA 3D printer to rapidly prototype, test, and iterate on those design decisions pushing the program forward in pursuit of aggressive review and delivery dates.
Mechanical Systems Engineer, New Glenn Vehicle
-Used MATLAB & Excel to navigate large trade spaces & conduct early design trades on the New Glenn vehicle’s actuated sub-systems, helping define overall system architecture-Utilized CREO/ProE & Windchill EPDM to design hydraulic components & secondary structure, route tubes, create drawings with GD&T, & manage subsystem level assemblies-Conducted static & dynamic analysis of mechanical & hydraulic components including hand calculations, FEA (ANSYS), system kinematics, & hydraulic system fluid analysis-Technical program management responsibilities including proposal editing, vendor selection & management, estimating budget & schedule, tracking system requirements & compliance, & tracking critical components & deliveries-Created, updated, & released hydraulic component & system specifications for vendor purchased & in-house designed parts utilizing DOORS Next Generation-Conducted Fault Tolerance Analysis (FTAs, using PTC Windchill Quality Solutions) & Failure Modes Effects & Criticality Analysis (FMECA) on the subsystem & component levels to verify reliability values & validate redundancy decisions-Worked with a cross functional team of avionics & control engineers to determine needed sensors, redundancy, & control logic to successfully run the hydraulic subsystem from integration & acceptance tests to in-flight & landing-Used AutoCAD P&ID to create & update the vehicle hydraulic system's graphical representation per AS1290B & managed it in Windchill EPDM -Used CREO & Windchill EPDM to design, route, & manage two subsystems of transport elements totaling over 500 individual elements. Wrote a MATLAB script that output clamp spacing for each tube size at each vehicle location to meet fatigue & stress requirements
Mechanical Systems Engineer, New Shepard Vehicle
-Design, tested, and installed upgraded mechanical system for Primary Decelrator System-Computer Aided Design work using CREO/ProE 5-Mechanical verification via hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis using ANSYS-Full mechanical design cycle: from whiteboard requirements to design and testing, to having the qualified hardware installed on the vehicle in 5 months (hardware has now flown on every launch since July 2017)
Mechanical Engineer
Part of the Mechanisms Design Group, main projects included design of stage separation mechanism and vehicle roll control system.-Created initial stage separation designs, and analyzed design spaces to assist with down select -Assisted in the design, development, manufacturing, and assembly of an actuator test stand-Worked with propulsion engineers on clean sheet redesign of vehicle roll control system
Mechanical Engineer
Worked with a small team of engineers to develop the B330 expandable space habitat. Main project involved working with our launch provider to design the hardware for the B330/launch vehicle interfaces and support structures.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Conducted research for the Mars Sample Return project. The task objective is to implement a method of “Simultaneous Separation, Seaming, Sealing, and Sterilization using Brazing (S4B)” as a means of assuring a sample is returned to Earth in a sealed container sterilized from potential biological contaminants. My responsibilities included;• Designing and machining test cylinders for the iterative brazing development process. • Using a lathe, machined stock sized stainless steel tubes into the test configurations• Performed brazing process, seeking uniform melting and effective surface wettingThe testing process became very iterative, making small changes to the test parameters or cylinder design configurations after incorporating the lessons learned from the previous experiment. During initial tests, using torches and a convection oven, oxidation would severely harm the brazing process. A bell jar vacuum chamber was set up with an induction heater to run the tests. Argon back fill was utilized to further minimize oxidation during vacuum testing. Our completion of proof of concept experiments in the bell jar vacuum will pave the way for the final tests involving a simulated Mars atmosphere
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Mechanical design and packaging of electronic components of kilowatt power conversion systems for Naval Nuclear Propulsion systems.-Wrote technical engineering proposals for ship board power systems-Helped organize a top level CAD assembly consisting of 10,000+ components-Used Autodesk Inventor for component design and optimization
