My principal expertise is Strategic Transport Masterplanning, covering two main areas:1) Assessing the impact of mixed use developments on transport networks, whether walking, cycling, public transport,metro, rail and highways; and 2) Assessing the temporary and permanent impacts of the new transport infrastructure provision and its effects on existing networks.I am employed by Jacobs UK, based in the Cottons Centre, London Bridge with a great view of the Thames, watching the increasing use of the waterway to move people and waste. I originally worked for the transport consultancy firm Colin Buchanan who were acquired by Sinclair Knight Merz in June 2011, who in turn were acquired by Jacobs in December 2013.Generally work on large scale mixed use developments in the UK, Malaysia, and the Middle East. Currently working on UK projects and a Regional Spatial Strategy for four Governorates in Oman. Increasingly my UK focus is determing the impacts of construction traffic for DCO applications for large strategic infrastructure projects where the construction programme exceeds 3-4 years, and such impacts are considered permanent. These are projects where the permanent impacts on completion are generally beneficial while the temporary construction impacts are adverse.But as I like to remind everyone, every bolt and nut in the Shard was delivered by road along St Thomas Street. But construction demand management measures can have significant commercial impacts on the delivery of a project, and therefore a balance needs to struck between cost and impacts to make sure a project is affordable. However, increasingly noise and air quality are the biggest constraints, particlularly where legally defined targets need to be met. My overseas projects are about large scale mixed use development. They are generally very car-focused and it is a challenge to set out the case for less car - dependency when people have very little public transport alternatives.My favourite destination is Kuala Lumpur when it is not covered in smog (agricultural and forest fires in Indonesia). Muscat, Oman is definitely the most authentic place in the Middle East, particularly in the built environment where the height restrictions means that the minarets of the mosques are tallest structures.
