The Institute of Sports and Exercise Medicine I chair The Institute which is a unique multi-professional Charity which helped to create the medical discipline of Sports and Exercise Medicine; it now concentrates on facilitating the development of research in these domains.Supporting researchFor many years I was a Board member of the Service Development and Organisation (SDO) which is part of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR). I was a member of the Executive Group of the Central and East London NIHR Comprehensive Local Research Network for several years.PublicationsI have published in areas that include: Information Architecture for a Federated Health Record Server Displaying the long term progression of patients with coronary artery disease Application of mathematical modelling techniques and of operational research to the domain of clinical medicine ECG repolarisation changes induced by mental stress.Administrative roles within UCLI was Vice Dean and Campus Director at the Whittington Campus for 12 years. I played an important part in developing the Campus to become one of the 3 main undergraduate medical teaching campuses for the newly merged Medical School. This also entailed helping to develop a new medical undergraduate curriculum

Clinical InterestsMy clinical interests include:o The prevention of coronary artery diseaseo The use of activity and exercise both in the prevention of, and in the treatment of cardiovascular diseaseo The prevention of strokeso The development of multiprofessional teams to deliver high quality careo The use of inter-active teaching and education both for its own value but also to effect change My clinical and Service Development InterestsAt a time of huge changes in health care relating to the increase in knowledge and understanding, the development of new materials and new technologies, it is both possible and essential to develop new, better and more cost-effective means of delivering care. My interests in these possibilities have concentrated on the goal of delivering high quality care as close to the home of the patient as is possible. The new models of care and new models of service delivery have involved several related domains:• The development of a distributed service in the realm of anticoagulation and stroke prevention – this can be perceived as a “surrogate” for any long-term condition• clinical governance of this “distributed service”• development of and evaluation of information systems culminating in a clinically useful and secure Electronic Health Record (EHR) in use across 5 Primary Care Trusts in north London and involving 30 different delivery sites. My Quality of Care – Clinical and Patient PerceivedI have led my clinical department in the hospital setting and now embracing 30 distributed clinical delivery sites to achieve Customer Service Excellence, the new government standard. These busy clinical settings serve an ethnically and socially diverse population in north London.
