When I discovered Counselling in 1998, after 20 years spent as an accountant, I was astonished by the satisfaction I derived from close psychological contact with another human being. That satisfaction has never left me, nor has my enthusiasm for the profession or my desire to continually hone my existing skills and to acquire new ones.I trained as a person-centred counsellor and what were then basic skills I learned during that time have now entered into my personality and I use them whenever I talk to friends or make new acquaintances. These skills are supposed to provide all the conditions necessary for positive therapeutic change, but when a client is desperate for alleviation of acute distress, sometimes something more is necessary to provide that relief, and accordingly I have acquired new skills which I also use alongside the old ones to provide a complete therapeutic experience.

I set this service up in March 2004, with the permission and support of the then Vicar of St Lukes, the Reverend Peter Clark, and the Centre Manager, Roger Howard. We introduced the service to the local GP's and to the Primary Care Mental Health Trust, and gradually built it up to the point where we had a waiting list for counselling services and I began offering student counsellors placement opportunities to put their theoretical knowledge into practise. Some of our former students stayed on as volunteer counsellors, once they had received their diplomas, and so the Service has progressed. Sadly times have changed and both of my above named colleagues have left their posts for a well-earned retirement, but the Counselling Service continues to offer psychological relief to distressed residents of the City of Manchester.The counselling service came under the auspices of a registered charity called TLC St Lukes, and continued to receive referrals from the local GP's and what has become the Mental Health and Social Care Trust, but, in addition, because the psychotherapy services financed by the local CCG are overwhelmed by the demand for counselling services, we also took referrals from partner organisations of the CCG as well as from the Psychology Departments of local hospitals.After nearly 13 years associated with St Lukes, I decided in the light of all the changes that had occurred in the last few years, it was time for me to move on and put my energy into building my neglected private counselling practice. I therefore resigned my position with effect from Christmas 2016
