Profile bio

About David Peat

I am David Peat and have a PhD in physics, specialising in ultra low temperature Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). After completing my PhD at the university of Nottingham I moved to Oxford to start a role as a service engineer at Oxford Instruments, a global leader in cryogenic and magnet technology. I have since furthered my progression into magnetic and cryogenic systems as a development engineer at cryogenic Ltd where I develop bespoke systems. I enjoy problem solving and taking a more hands on approach. I also have experience in CAD (Inventor)

Listed skills include Physics, Experimentation, Nmr, Microsoft Office, and 14 others.

New Product Introduction Engineer

Current

Aid in the design of optical systems before turning the concept into a production ready product which is sold all over the world and used in all the films you love from Harry Potter to Marvel and more. I have hand on skills for building the lens, uploading and testing the electronics system inside the lens and producing testing procedures to test the lens optically and mechanically before being introduced into the market. Once the Product is ready from a design point I produce all the documentation and deliver the training to the wider team to allow for the scaled production.

Feb 2019 - Present

Research Associate

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Collecting and processing data for research in the field of hyper polarised Nuclear magnetic resonance. Support collaboration with Southampton university. Publishing papers in research journals.

Sep 2019 - Dec 2019

Development Engineer

London, United Kingdom

Design bespoke cryogenic and magnetic systems to match customers requirements with the use of CAD. Do initial inspection of parts to ensure conformity with technical drawings. Build test procedures for the product as well and testing the product keeping a record of pass failure rates. Commission cryogenic systems on customers sites.

Feb 2017 - Jul 2019

Service Engineer

The commission and maintenance of cryogenic equipment including dilution refrigerators for the use in academic environments. This was a customer facing role where I had to teach the customer about the operation of the system as well problem solve if the customer is highlighting issues which they have come across during the operation of their system.

Apr 2015 - Feb 2017

Phd Student In Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

I am running a 2.6T field cycling NMR machine at 4k looking at reducing T1 times via doping the samples with para magnetic materials. I will then be extending my research using a 14.4T machine running at 14mK.

Oct 2011 - Dec 2015

Undergraduate

I have Completed a Masters degree in physics. Modules included 3 modules of Quantum Mechanics, 2 modules of classical mechanics, 3 modules in relativity along with various other modules giving me computing and programming skills.

Sep 2007 - Jul 2011

Physics

I have studied at least one optics experiment each year for the first three years of my degree. This experiments range from simple experiments like looking into Bragg diffraction using a wave guide and metal ball bearing or the polarisation of wave guides using a metal grid. Then I took part more advance experiments, like using an a magnetic field to spit energy levels of atoms and study the Zeeman effect and finally I worked on Faraday rotation. This experiment involved firing a laser through a sample which was in a uniform magnetic field. When the laser passes through the sample its polarisation is changed, however the direction of how the laser enters the sample isn't important so from the lasers point of view the rotation of polarisation will always be clockwise no matter if the laser was fired or if it was reflected from a mirror.Nuclear: For one term of my third year degree I was working with radioactive materials. I was using x ray sources and metal filters to work out how the k alpha and k beta lines relate to each other and how this information can be useful in medical imaging. I was also involved with a similar experiment using an anode tube to make the x-rays rather than a source. Electronics: I haven't received much formal training in building electronics I have built some electronics for some of the other experiments I have participated in. I have knowledge on electric circuit theory however not much experience in designing a circuit form myself. All circuits I have built (soldered or on bread boards) have had a design where I may have replaced the values of the components used.Miscellaneous: This section is for experiments which don't fall neatly into one area or are just measuring constants. Examples include measuring the speed of sound through various gases and liquids and measuring the speed of light in air.
