In 2012 I retired as Deputy Course Director on the Publishing MA at the London College of Communication (formerly London College of Printing), University of the Arts London, where I taught publishing technology (structured documents, XML, information management etc.), print production, research methods and project management.I was hard-copy editor for Computer Abstracts for over ten years and wrote many of the 'Cool Sites in Computing' reviews for EmeraldInsight. I have also written several books and articles.From 1989 to the early 2000s, I provided consultancy, project management and editorial services. These included management of the 'Electronic Journals on Superjanet (Superjournal)' project in 1993, a review of the production procedures at The Lancet, consultancy on the Hutchinson Encyclopedia database for Helicon Publishing and consultancy on SGML for the Macmillan (now Palgrave) journals. I also gave short courses for publishers on what I then called 'Computing with Words', the manipulation of computer text files for typesetting, the forerunner of today's procedures for the production of apps, web pages and e-books. Finally, I have been publishing (and producing books for private clients) for several years. The published books are mainly of local interest including histories the village where I live and of Winchelsea Beach and books about people: the adventures of a young man who emigrated to Australia in 1929, the story of Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Elizabeth Siddal in Hastings and a book about Russell Thorndike, his Dr Syn stories and the Romney Marsh. More recent books include histories of Dungeness, Greatstone and Littlestone, and Pett Level. I have also published a history of the pubs and |Breweries of Romney Marsh and in 2023 'The Funniest Man in London', the story of H.G. Pélissier, a forgotten entertainer of the early 1900s and am currently working on two other local history books.I am happy to discuss producing and publishing books, as well as producing private publications, such as personal and family histories.I am also convenor of Working Group 1 (nomenclature) of ISO Technical Committee 130 (Graphic Technology), responsible, among other standards, for ISO 5776, the international proofreading standard, which includes recommendations not only for alphabetic languages, but also for Chinese, Japanese and Korean.
