I am a thing of the past. A relic of, perhaps, a better era for tailors.There was a time when a bespoke tailor took deep pride in his work. He had a relationship with each of his customers, and every stitch on every garment was sewn or overseen by him personally. This was a way to make a living, and a way of life.In this day and age, a tailor can still theoretically make a living this way. But why would he? The labor and materials required to make a suit - in-house, by hand - cost up to $3,000, or even more. Or at least, they do if true, bespoke tailoring is at hand. Why would any sane person use such methods when a factory halfway across the world will provide a garment of "similar" quality for, literally, a tenth the cost? The customer never needs to know, and you can sell the suit at staggering additional profit. Why survive when you can be rich?And those are the words that don't work for me. "The customer never needs to know."I want my customer to love each of the 200+ hand stitches that hold his lapels in an elegant curve against his chest, and I want to be the author of those stitches. I want my customer to pay me a wage worthy of my hard work and training, rather than my slick business sense.Why do I think I can do this? When others sell so-called "bespoke" suits on ebay for $500, why should I be able to compete? How can I expect a business model from 200 years ago to succeed?I have a different definition of success.I don't hope to become rich, or to grow my empire. I hope to make real suits for good people, and then to donate a portion of the proceeds to help feed those who really need it. I am not a man of grand personal ambition, but of a big soul and tireless patience and caring. I will choose my success, and it will benefit others as much as me, just as I think it should.Thank you for reading.
