I am a barrister at Wilberforce Chambers in Lincoln’s Inn in London. I am primarily a pensions lawyer. I practised as a solicitor until October 2017, including as a Freshfields partner (until the end of April 2015) and advised both companies and pension scheme trustees on all aspects of pensions law. I have advised on scheme rules, funding issues, section 75 debts, changes in benefits, changes to pension schemes, and Pensions Regulator issues. I also advise on insolvency and employment law issues.I enjoy speaking and writing on pensions law. My latest book “Pensions, Contracts and Trusts: Legal Issues on Decision Making” was published in 2020. It looks in particular at the impact of the Braganza decision.My book "The Law of Pension Trusts" was published by Oxford University Press in November 2013. and I co-edited the series of books: "Freshfields on Corporate Pensions Law", written by the Freshfields London pensions team. The latest was published in February 2015. In 2016 my book "Employment Law and Pensions" came out (in February), followed by the 6th edition of "Corporate Insolvency: Employment and Pension Rights" in two volumes (one on employment and one on pensions) in December. All three books are published by Bloomsbury Professional.I have also contributed to other books. I am the co-editor of the quarterly journal, "Trust Law International".I was chairman of the Association of Pension Lawyers (APL) from 2001 to 2003 and have spoken several times at the APL annual conference and other seminars. I am currently a member of the APL Communications committee. The APL awarded me their Wallace Medal in 1998 and again in 2015 (for excellence on communicating pensions issues).I have spoken three times in Australia at the annual Superannuation Law conference (1999, 2009 and 2019) and in three separate years at Cambridge University on the commercial equity paper on the LLM course.
