Leading causes of vision impairment and blindness in the USA are age-related macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease. Worldwide, the projected number of people with age-related macular degeneration is 196 million, increasing to 288 million by 2040.Chronic diseases, including many chronic sight-threatening diseases, are amplified and perpetuated by the inflammasome pathway of the innate immune system. With aging, it becomes more difficult for the body to shut down the inflammatory process. Activation and assembly of the inflammasome complex, a multiprotein oligomer of the innate immune system (as opposed to the adaptive immune system), promotes cleavage and secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin 1β and interleukin 18, but also the release of other inflammatory cytokines, including VEGF.InflammX Therapeutics has highly differentiated, lead drug candidates based upon a novel mechanism of action called “Gap Junction Hemichannel Modulation.” InflammX technology shuts down inflammsome complex assembly by stopping release of the inflammasome activator signal, breaking the chronic cycle of inflammatory cytokine release, restoring the microvascular bed and promoting tissue repair.
