Responsible for strategic service direction and clinical leadership of the ED. This includes development and implementation of short and long-term service plans, annual professional development reviews for Senior Medical Officers (SMOs), interviewing and hiring SMOs and Resident Medical Officers (RMOs), identifying and addressing departmental and organisational risk, responding to patient complaints, guiding peer review and clinical audit, performance management of SMOs and RMOs, and maintaining positive clinical relationships with inpatient services.The Palmerston North Hospital has approximately 50,000 presentations per annum, is an Australasian Level 4 trauma centre, is accredited for 24 months (Tier 2) ACEM training, and is an educational site for Trainee Interns (TIs) from the University of Otago. Primary responsibilities as an emergency physician include direct clinical management of ED patients and ED flow as well as clinical supervision and classroom teaching of RMOs and TIs
