I am thoroughly enjoying my role with Lawter (N.Z.) Limited as process automation engineer. My role involves EI&C and IT. Lawter is part of the Harima Chemical group of companies www.harima.co.jp/en/about/. Our products are developed using pine chemical resources like rosin, fatty acids, turpentine and other materials all obtained from pine trees. Lawter is an environmentally friendly alternative to the petrochemical industry. Lawter uses crude tall oil and crude sulphur turpentine from the pulp industry to produce products through unique processes, many developed right here in Mount Maunganui. We have one year remaining in a significant upgrade. The work completed thus far has increased safety, improved plant reliability, improved environmental outcomes, and increased the level of automation. I previously worked with Beca Limited for over twenty years’ as an Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Engineer in the industries of Pulp and Paper, Water and Wastes, Power Generation, Food and Beverage, and Mining and Metals. I have been involved with scope definition, capital cost estimating, project management and the development of control systems from system definition to implementation. In recent years my focus has been safety instrumented systems, hazardous area classifications and hazardous area electrical design. I have enjoyed a wide variety of roles including electrical and controls team leader on a number of significant multi-disciplinary projects both in Australia and New Zealand.My career highlights include 5 years on site. Firstly I was working as an instrumentation and controls engineer based at the Kawerau Pulp and Paper Mills. My responsibilities during this time included developing and commissioning process control software in a plant running 24/7. The stakes were high and a lot of responsibility to get it right! My second period of site engineering was serving as the site engineer for Poyry and Beca AMEC during the $140M paper machine upgrade at Norske Skog Albury, Australia.
