About David Puttnam

I am Chair of Atticus Education, an online education company I founded in 2012. We are responsible for delivering audio-visual seminars to students around the world. I am also a member of the House of Lords where I pursue an active role in a variety of areas, from educational and environmental issues to digital skills. In 2019, I was appointed chair to the Democracy & Digital Technologies committee to investigate the impact of digital technologies on democracy. The report for our committee’s findings was published in June 2020. I set up my production company, Enigma Productions, in 1976. My films, including The Mission, The Killing Fields, Local Hero, Chariots of Fire, Midnight Express, Bugsy Malone and Memphis Belle, have won 10 Oscars, 31 BAFTAs, 13 Golden Globes, nine Emmys, four David di Donatellos in Italy and the Palme D'Or at Cannes. I currently hold a number of positions including: President of the Film Distributors’ Association; Chair of Nord Anglia International School, Dublin; Life President, National Film & Television School; Chair of Film London Executive Task Force; UNICEF Ambassador; Member of the Advisory Board of Accenture (Ireland); Adjunct Professor of Film Studies and Digital Humanities at University College Cork; Adjunct Professor, School of Media & Communications at RMIT University in Australia; Board Member of the Commonwealth of Learning, Patron, Dublin Bid World Summit on Media for Children 2020/2023 and International Ambassador, WWF since 2016. I am a member of the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) Parliamentary Network and a founding member of the ECIU (Energy Climate Intelligence Unit) since 2014.

    In 1976, I set up Enigma Films and produced The Duellists (1977), Midnight Express (1978), Foxes (1980) and Chariots of Fire (1981) which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and was produced in association with Goldcrest Pictures. Through the 1980s, I produced Local Hero (1983), Cal (1984), The Killing Fields (1984) and The Mission (1986) which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. In the 1990s, I produced Memphis Belle (1990), Meeting Venus (1991), A Dangerous Man: Lawrence After Arabia (1992), Being Human (1994), War of the Buttons (1994), The Confessional (1994), and My Life So Far (1995).I was also a producer and executive producer on a number of television titles. After setting up Enigma TV, I made the First Love series for a fledgling Channel Four (between 1982-1984): P'tang, Yang, Kipperbang, Experience Preferred...But Not Essential, Secrets, Those Glory Glory Days, Sharma and Beyond and Hallowed Ground. At the same time, I produced Forever Young (1983); Red Monarch (1983), Winter Flight (1984), The Frog Prince (1985), Mr. Love (1985), Defence of the Realm (1986) and Knights & Emeralds (1986) all for TV. I also executive-produced The Josephine Baker Story (1991), Without Warning: The James Brady Story (1992), and The Burning Season (1994).

    Contributing to the development and implementation of the Government’s National Digital Strategy, published in 2013, I used my position to raise the profile of Ireland's digital objectives.
