Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Ca

When I was assigned to Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, I just graduated from Hospital Corpsman school in San Diego, California. Once there, I was assigned to work in the newborn nursery, and I did that for about a year. Next, I was transferred to Camp Del Mar Branch Clinic 21. I learned to do sick call, physical exams, help active duty personnel with emergency medicine, and other duties. Finally, I was sent to work in the Physical Therapy department as a receptionist by answering telephone for appointments, notify technicians that there patient has arrived as well as notify the physical therapist about their appointments when they performed Electromyography (EMG).

U.S.S.Carl Vinson (Cvn-70)

Once I completed basic training, I decided to be an Airman because it sound exciting and interesting. I went to the Airman Training School in San Diego for six weeks. I graduated and I was assigned to be on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Carl Vinson (CVN-70). At the time, it was a brand new ship, and it was going on an around the world cruise. I got to see many countries such as Morocco, Ivory Coast, Australia, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan. I had wonderful learning experience visiting these countries, and I wish I can do it again. My first assignment was to work in the V-1 department, where they helped put the aircraft on the catapults before they took off in the open air. I realized that this department was not a good fit for me, so I was sent to work in the V-3 department. This department help stow aircraft in the hangar bay what was called "chocks and chains." The chocks were put around the wheels so they stay in place, and the chains were attached to the aircraft as well as to the pad eye on the hangar deck. We also move the aircraft the elevator from the flight deck to the hangar bay. I finally realized that I needed to change my rate to something I would really enjoy. I submitted my request to go to Hospital Corpsman 'A' School, and it was approved. I was given orders to go to Naval Hospital San Diego for a ten-week training course. I graduated in August 1984, and I was given orders for Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.
