Dr. David Riley is the President of Living Systems, LLC., and the Director of Strategy for Indigenized Energy. His fields of expertise include integrative design, smart and sustainable housing, energy efficiency, solar energy, and smart grid systems. Following his graduation from Penn State in 1994, Dr. Riley joined the faculty at University of Washington in the Department of Construction Management, where he developed a focus in sustainable construction and green building design. Upon his return to Penn State in 2001, Dr. Riley established an integrated research and education program in sustainable housing called the American Indian Housing Initiative (AIHI) in which students from multiple universities collaborate in the design and construction of sustainable structures on American Indian reservations. In 2005-07, Dr. Riley led the Penn State entry in the Department of Energy 2007 Solar Decathlon Competition. This effort led to the development of the MorningStar solar home, a teaching and research facility located on Penn State’s University Park campus. Dr. Riley has led of $15M in DOE funded research and education programming focused on the integration of commercialization, workforce development, and education programs in the fields of energy efficiency, solar, wind, and smart grid technologies. These efforts include leadership of three DOE centers: The Northern Mid-Atlantic Solar Education and Resource Center, the GridSTAR Center, and the National Energy Leadership Corps. He is currently the lead educational designer for the Energy Storage and Microgrid Training and Certification (ESAM-TAC) initiative, and is also working academic and industry partners to advance renewable energy and smart grid projects through integrative processes. Dr. Riley also served as the Program Manager for the Regenerative Business Prize from 2016-2019
