Analyzed compressor designs for proposals. Machines have flexible rotor(s) with over-hung masses, supported by tilting pad bearings. Each rotor has one sub-synchronous critical speed for each impeller. The system is modeled in sections with unbalance at the impellers, and stiffness + damping at the bearings. Three programs are run to: A) insure separation between critical & operating speeds B) determine amplification factors & log decrements C) produce Bode plots of each critical speed. Easy systems take less than an hour to analyze. Some require new bearings, special materials, special rotor length, and so on. If cost and risk grow too much, designs are rejected with detailed notes on what to avoid and which direction to proceed. Machines are rarely rejected entirely.
