Head of internal Audit for diverse and acquisitive FTSE 250 group during transition and development from regional motor retailer to one of Europe's largest public transport groups with a £2 billion turnover.Responsible for supervision of audits of all group divisions and subsidiaries and a staff of twenty based in across the group’s operations, with a focus on financial, operational and business risks. Planning and dealing with major changes in the group’s operations which developed from being primarily in vehicle retailing and leasing in the UK when I joined (under the Cowie brand) to Arriva becoming one of Europe’s leading public transport suppliers, providing bus and train services in ten EU countries, following regular acquisitions across Europe. Responsible for creating an effective multi-cultural team to deal with these changes that developed from myself and four trainees based at head office to twenty staff spread across the Group’s locations with appropriate language skills, professional experience, knowledge and qualifications to cover all of Arriva’s operations. Reporting to the Group’s Audit Committee, including submission of and reporting against an Annual Audit Plan and attendance at all Group Audit Committee Meetings.Controlling and having editorial responsibility for the approximately 100 Internal Audit reports issued each year, all of which were circulated to the Group’s Executive Directors. Responsible for facilitating Group’s procedures for monitoring its main commercial risks, both at a plc and divisional level.Liaison with the group’s external auditors to ensure their work was reduced as far as practicable by the reliance they place on Group Internal Audit’s work. Regularly involved in pre-acquisition reviews of potential acquisitions and post-acquisition reviews of acquired businesses as well as other ad-hoc projects.
