Prior to joining Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine, I served as a founding faculty at an Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine. I served as a Physiology discipline director and respiratory course director. My professional career began with me earning my BS in Biology from Westminster College. After graduation, I spent a year involved in AmeriCorps: National Civilian Community Corps. During the time I was stationed in Denver CO, I worked in a variety of projects in four areas: environment, education, public safety, and unmet human needs. This experience planted a seed of interest in education in my mind. Eventually, I relocated to Detroit and earned my Ph.D. in 2003 from Wayne State University SOM. My dissertation research focused on autonomic control of the heart following spinal cord injury.  I examined electro-physiological and molecular changes in the heart before and after a spinal cord injury. My post-doctoral training was at the University of Michigan. My primary project focused on using adenoviral vectors to induce the expression of parvalbumin, a non-native calcium binding protein, into cardiac myocytes with diastolic dysfunction. My interests in Physiology education led me to secure my first faculty appointment at Minnesota State University Moorhead where I could promote undergraduate research and teach. I also was engaged in regional and national groups including: the Fargo/Moorhead Economic Development Corporation, Project Kaleidoscope (PKAL) and Team-based Learning Collaborative (TBLC). I am also active within the American Physiological Society and Michigan Physiological Society. Specifically, I have served on the education committee, the teaching section steering committee and served as the chair of the Planning Committee for the 2015 MPS meeting. The combination of these experiences has been useful in my career progression that focuses on promoting integrative student-centered biomedical experiences around Physiology
