All of the content I create is focused on jobs, work, (mis)management, and organizational dysfunction (and occasionally the underlying economics of it all). MY BACKGROUND:In 2004, I quit a career-track job as a medicinal chemist in pharmaceutical research and development. I had nothing lined up, no prospects, and no real plan. To my friends and family, it undoubtedly seemed like a lot to give up; I'd double majored in chemistry and chemical engineering, earned my Masters and PhD in organic chemistry, and completed post-doctoral work at Duke University. Instead, I took what little $ I'd saved and travelled; backpacking my way through New Zealand, surfing the east coast of Australia, and even wheezing my way up to Everest Base Camp in Nepal. When I returned six months later, I took the first job I could find: retail sales for an outdoor clothing store. I slept on friend's couches, ate a lot of beans and rice, and thought about what it's like to get by on a low-wage job on the lowest rung of the organizational ladder. Eventually I made my way back into my degree field, but my heart wasn't in it. All of my work experiences had by now convinced me something was seriously wrong with how most people are being managed. And increasingly I was feeling I understood why. So once again, I quit my job to focus on the question: "What makes a good manager *good*?" What I've discovered may surprise you: The way most people think about the management role is fundamentally flawed. But by overcoming this simple misconception, anyone can become a better manager...All of what I write about is informed by my many experiences at the so-called “bottom” of the organization chart. I pen a weekly advice column under a pseudonym ("the subordinate is IN"; www.thesubordinateisin.com), and have a podcast by the same name (Season One now available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or wherever you stream your favorite show).
