SummerRise is a youth-focused workforce development initiative that brings high school youth (11th and 12th graders) into local workplaces to familiarize them with employer expectations, workplace environments, customer service, communications, and to broaden their awareness of the career opportunities available in Montgomery County. After completing an impact report analyzing results from the first year of the program, I was engaged to manage the second year of this partnership between WorkSource Montgomery and MCPS, the local school district and program partner. I initiated a strategic approach to double the number of student participants and expand host organizations from the public, private, government, education, and non-profit sectors and to focus on adding hosts from leading employment sectors in Montgomery County in order to introduce students to career pathways in the fields with the greatest growth potential. My approach was to help shape participants' workplace readiness and networks to prepare them for an informed and effective post-secondary approach to pursuing educational opportunities and jobs that lead to 21st century, "new-collar" careers.
