I offer highly personalized, complete architectural services for people who want their new home or modifications of their present one to truly reflect who they are. I believe architecture arises in the encounter between human life and the natural world. Each of my projects is unique because no two clients and no two sites are the same. I work in close collaboration with my clients whose personal interests and values direct the design process. This, together with a detailed understanding of the site, creates the architecture.

My book titled "The Death of Drawing: Architecture in the Age of Simulation" will be published by Routledge Taylor & Francis in June 2014. The book addresses the likely effects on architectural thinking and practice of building information modeling and computational design. These are simulation technologies that engage the mind and the designed object in radically different ways than traditional drawing (including CAD), replacing the imaginative synthesis of form from two-dimensional representations by immersion in simulated environments.The book is based on my extensive experience with these technologies in my practice, teaching and contacts at the forefront of their development and adoption. Thinking about the effects of simulation on architecture requires both a theoretical background and practical experience with these technologies, as the details of their use in practice influences their actual impacts on architectural thought. My background in applied mathematics and computing has provided me insights into important differences between the representation and meaning of geometry in drawing and computation, fundamental to the design and reception of works of architecture. My initiation into architecture through intensive training in drawing was typical of architects before the advent of computers. It profoundly influenced my understanding of architecture as it did architects since the Renaissance. Truly new bases for this understanding have arisen due to simulation for the first time in 500 years. This is not to be regretted, but understood in relation to the drawing tradition which still pervades the thinking of architects even as we strike out into new territory.

Technology in Architectural Practice is a knowledge community of the American Institute of Architects that helps members stay current on developments in technology that affect their work and make the best use of technology in their practices. We convene an annual congress (Building Connections) with representatives from various industry sectors that influence the use of building information modeling (BIM) in the construction industry. We also sponsor an annual BIM Awards program celebrating the most advanced uses of BIM and integrated project delivery. We also offer quarterly webinars on various aspects of technology affecting architects, and are developing an online BIM curriculum that the AIA will offer as part of its continuing education programs. I am leading the creation of the BIM curriculum.

My primary interest in ACADIA is in the effects of digital design environments on design ideation. As a practitioner as well as a teacher, I have experienced a profound changes in how architectural design is approached since I began my career in the mid-80's. I believe architecture is undergoing a sea change not only in how it is practiced and its role in building production, but in its conceptual underpinnings as a discipline. I am currently writing a book on this topic for Routledge (see below).I have presented two papers at ACADIA conferences (Savannah 2005 and Lincoln 2011) as well as moderating a panel on current applications of computational design in commercial practice (San Francisco 2012).

Co-founder and Principal. The firm has received many design awards for a wide variety of project types including recreation, mixed use, multi-family residential and urban design. Intensive analysis of all aspects of the site is the point of departure for all of our projects. We have made extensive use of building information modeling (BIM) and GIS since 1996 and continue to experiment with new ways to make use of technology to create great design. Sustainabie design has been our standard practice since the firm's inception.We make innovative use of BIM and other technologies to design humane yet high-performing buildings and urban design plans for the projects including urban and infill housing, urban mixed use, transportation-oriented development and higher education. We integrate expertise in architecture and urban planning to design plans that can be implemented and buildings that enhance their contexts.
