I am a seasoned marketing/communications professional who has led the Public Communications Division of the Massachusetts Nurses Association since 1993, where I am responsible for managing the MNA’s public relations, media relations and marketing activities on behalf of the more than 23,000 frontline registered nurses and health professionals who belong to this organization. Founded in 1903, the MNA is the professional association and the largest union for registered nurses and health professionals in the Commonwealth. The division’s focus is to ensure that issues of concern to nurses and the MNA are covered by the media and well understood by the general public and other audiences impacted by nursing and health care policy. While I sometimes serve as an official spokesperson for the organization, our goal is to ensure that our members -- frontline nurses and health professionals -- are used as sources and commentators on a wide variety of issues by all types of media. As a founding member of National Nurses United, the largest national union for registered nurses in U.S. history, the MNA is also involved in a variety of nursing, health care, labor and social justice campaigns on the state and national level. We believe that because nurses spend more time with patients in all settings than any other health care provider; our members see more and know more about what works and doesn’t work in the health care system, and therefore, our members are best equipped to comment on and to educate the public about issues related to health care.
