Sr. Systems And Software Engineer

Current

Durham, Nc, Us

As a multi-passionate Systems and Software Engineer with a broad skills and an even broader interest base, I provide Bell and Howell with both creative options and the ability to realize them. My primary duties are to support the embedded-control and HMI software for the Champion product line; but secondarily I support the Navigator inserter series, the Quick Collect Go! (click-and-collect) products, and much, much more. As a "born" engineer, I'm always learning, always trying. And as part of that, I've led peer improvement book reading clubs, participated in employee-led activities committees, and served as something of an in-house entrepreneur-in-residence. I can honestly say that with interesting work and great coworkers, it's been a fun ride here at Bell and Howell!

Integration Specialist

Medsage Technologies, Llc.

I was hired at medSage to be a Java developer, but I think I only wrote and debugged less than 500 lines of code. medSage decided to make use of my database integration, design, SQL programming skills instead... and the fact that I was a technologist comfortable in front of prospects and customers. My most rewarding (and I think, corporately valuable) work at medSage was to work with prospects to overcome technical objections to purchase (and often times, to soothe bruised egos!). It's interesting... when selling new technology solutions, it may take 10 people to approve a deal, but only one "I'm not sure..." can kill it. And that "I'm not sure." was typically the head of IT who just discovered that management was "shoving some new unvetted tech down their necks!" So it was good to have a sales-y tech guy along to help the human integration of our technology solution. So ultimately, the bulk of my time was spent working with new customers to integrate medSage's proprietary real-time "data conduit" application with their patient database applications (ranging from FoxPro and Firebird to Access, Oracle, and SQL Server.)

1994 - 1999 ~5 yrs

Systems Engineer

Lucas Labs, Ltd., Lucas/Signatone

As a Systems and Software Engineer with a leading plasma etch research company I developed control, test and diagnostics equipment for use in the Semiconductor Industry. (My specialty is in real-time programming, process control and data acquisition for plasma systems.)Probably the most exciting work I did at Lucas Labs was developing and installing a dual-head High Density Plasma research system at Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, NJ. featuring both Helicon and ECR plasma sources, this modular "cluster tool" also featured a plethora of test and diagnostic instrumentation (including ESCA/XPS, backside laser interferometer, tessellated sensor cryo-chuck and a fast injection Langmuir probe for real-time plasma power and density measurement, for example.) Some instruments were commercial, some I helped develop and wrote software for. (Historical note: Bell Labs used to be the R&D Dept. of the human race. One of the greatest thrills of my life was my first time standing in the great high hallway, there in the home of the transistor, LASER, solar cells, Telstar, cell phones and thousands more inventions... and looking up at the brass plaques lining the walls bearing the images of my heroes, people like Brian Kernighan, Dennis Ritchie, Arno Penzias, and more. And there I was... Total nerdgasm! Now it's up to companies like SpaceX to carry the torch and lead humanity forward to the stars.)

1989 - 1994 ~5 yrs

Instrumentation, Test Automation, And Control Systems Programmer

Solarex Thin Films Division

During my 5 years at Solarex in Newtown, PA, I designed and developed automated test and manufacturing equipment for both the thin-film photovoltaics industry (a-Si:H) and cutting-edge large area, high resolution Active Matrix Thin Film Transistor LCD's. (AM TFT LCD)My greatest career achievement was developing 3 successive generations of Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) equipment control systems (off-the-shelf hardware, fully custom software), including one series which won international recognition for producing the highest efficiency a-Si:H cell to date.
