Diamond Area LeaderCarbide Grinding Co., Inc. Sep 1989 - Mar 1995Carbide Grinding, Inc., (Former member, UAW local #957)As Diamond Area Leader, I was accustomed to making parts out of extremely hard and strong materials such as machine cutting inserts and form tools with typical tolerances of +/- 0.0005" (0.0127 mm), and on special tools, down to +/- .0001" (0.00254 mm) Materials used included tungsten carbide, silicon carbide, tool steel, aluminum oxide, Greenleaf Ceramics, CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride), Borazon, polycrystalline diamond (PCD), and mono-crystal diamond as well. This also taught me a great deal about Grinding Wheel technology as well. And I established SPC methods on the factory floor in order to meet Ford's ISO 9001 supplier requirement for 1994. I made these machine cutting tool inserts for many Automotive and Aerospace Companies, including: Chrysler Transmission, Kokomo; IPT, Greenfield; Ford Steering Indy: GE Aviation in several cities: Zohllner Pistons in Fort Wayne; and New Venture Gear in Muncie, just to name a few. Section Leader Responsibilities included the design, induction brazing, EDM rough shaping, finish grinding, polishing and final inspection of Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) and Cubic Boron Nitride (CBN) tipped machine tool cutting inserts. I was also responsible for the training and supervision of all workers that did work for this area. I was required to do set-up, quality control, production scheduling, fixture design and construction, machine maintenance, and quality improvement. During the course of my employment, I designed and developed methods and techniques used in the manufacture of PCD and CBN tipped machine tool inserts. Machines used included: Agie CNC EDM, Ewag Precision Diamond Grinder, Coborn PCD Wheel Polisher, Ameritherm RF Induction Heating Station, Harig Surface Grinders, MCS Ultrasonic Baths, Blanchard Flat Grinder, Wit-O-Matic Automatic Carbide Insert Grinders, and Bridgeport Vertical Mills.
