My thesis examines the mineralogical and micro-structural properties of a soft calcareous mudstone through the use of SEM, XRD and a suite of standard index tests in order to correlate their micro-scale properties with their macro-scale mechanical behaviours as observed during advanced triaxial tests (employing local strain gauges and Bender Elements) along with unconfined tensile tests using DIC and one-dimensional consolidation testing.
