One of these operations is managing the UK’s Atmospheric Research Aircraft.This aircraft is a highly modified BAE146-301 which is owned by Research and Innovation UK and the National Environmental Research Council. It is operated for these Government departments by the Facility for Airborne Atmospheric Measurement (FAAM).FAAM is the result of collaboration between the Met Office and the National Centre for Atmospheric Sciences (NCAS) to provide an aircraft measurement platform for use by all the UK atmospheric research community. We also operate throughout the world on science campaigns for foreign governments and third party organisations. Our home base is at EGTC Cranfield University Airport, Bedfordshire.My current job is Project Manager ARA Operations, which involves the day to day management and running of this aircraft. The position includes daily operations planning, crewing, sales and engineering planning and working with our science customers to achieve the best possible science with the aircraft.The position also requires liaising with multiple local and government agencies, the UK Meteorological Office and numerous Universities Science departments. Within my planning capacity I help manage the aspirations of our various science partners, taking their ideas from paper, through to flying and collecting data with the aircraft worldwide to complete their case studies. I worked as a Supervisor in a small team reporting directly to the Station Manager. The position involved the overseeing of all facets of the daily ELAL operation at London Luton and liaising closely with our service providers. This included Passenger Handling, Flight Dispatch, Cargo, Internal Reporting and Administration. This position involved the oversight and management of the Company flying program when on shift.In 1988 I moved to the Outstations and Overseas Department. My first position was a posting to help start-up a new airline called EuroBerlin, which was based at Tegal Airport Berlin. On return from this project I was promoted to an Airport Station Manager.Whilst attached to this department I worked on, and managed a number of contracts worldwide. These included, in no particular order, Birmingham England, Edinburgh Scotland, Dublin Ireland, Buenos Aires Argentina, Canary Islands, Paris and numerous ex French colonies in West Africa, Cairo Egypt, New York and Orlando Florida USA.I was fortunate to be stationed in Orlando Florida for two extended periods of time that amounted to an approximated total stay of twelve years in North America. Whilst based there I managed all the Company’s operations in America and the Caribbean.Following the tragic events of 11 September 2001, I returned to the UK taking a position based in Edinburgh overseeing the company operations from Scotland and Ireland. I was later recalled to company HQ at London Luton to take a regional mangers position, retaining responsibility for all my airports in Scotland and Ireland, as well as adding the London Airports of Luton and Stansted.
