The mission of Clinical Information Sciences, LLC, is to improve the lives of people by enabling better clinical decisions by their health care team members.Improving medical decisions is possible through a better understanding of the decision-making process along with the skills and knowledge to find, evaluate, and apply the best available medical evidence. Through live and online courses, CIS teaches doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and others how to take an evidence-based approach to the care of patients.CIS offers several different teaching methods for institutions and medical training sites to teach their clinicians and administrators the basic concepts and knowledge of evidence-based medicine and the applied practice of information mastery. Via live presentations, self-directed online learning modules, teach-the-teacher programs, and individual consultation with healthcare systems, CIS aims to help institutions develop a culture of improving quality while simultaneously reducing the cost of care through the incorporation of the best evidence into decision-making.The teaching materials used by CIS are based on the concepts and practices developed by David Slawson, MD, of the University of Virginia and Allen Shaughnessy, PharmD, MMedEd. Together they have written over 40 research papers, review articles, books, and editorials focusing on evidence-based medicine, information, mastery, and clinical decision making. They are developers of the internationally recognized course, “Information Mastery: A Practical Approach to Evidence-Based Care.” This course, which was developed in 1995, has been presented to thousands of participants throughout the United States as well as in eight other countries. It now serves as the basis for many curricula in evidence-based medicine in residencies around the country, as well as in medical, pharmacy, and other professions’ schools.
