Managed the process of assessing QHS&E processes in place and modifying to fit ORE Catapult model. * Asset Protection Strategy and RealisationDefined the strategy for ORE Catapult as a public body to outsource the operation and maintenance of the 8MW Offshore Class turbine including day to day QHS&E responsibility whilst maintaining accountability. Produced the procurement specification under OJEU rules including performance criteria. Technical assessor and adviser on the bids. Commissioned the service with the successful party (Sgurr Energy) and supervised the hand-over from Samsung Heavy Industries personnel via ORE Catapult (briefly) to Sgurr Energy. Modelled along the lines of venture capital investments, innovative game changing technologies were sought and investments made to pull them to market. I was engaged:* Investment Gating ProcessI participated in the technical diligence for a number of potential investments in renewable energy technology, including interviewing candidate organisations and predicting their potential.* Business Process DevelopmentI introduced and documented key processes such as the stage-gate selection process, programme and project management processes, IP capture process and led the response to public audit of fund performance.* Programme Manager for OrangutanI managed the development programme taking a clamping/climbing technology for wind turbine towers from concept through small scale trials to a large scale mock-up, controlling the investment of about £2.3M along the way. The device had the potential to step-change the onshore wind turbine crane servicing market, however Scottish Enterprise closed the ITI programme before the development could bear commercial fruit. -
EngineerNarec Sep 2004 - May 2006I was employed for three major capital projects at Narec:* Design and Realisation of LPNI managed the design, procurement, realisation and commission of the Low Power Network in the Charles Parsons Technology centre. This laboratory contained test rigs of networks, DFIG generators, synchronous generators, fully rated converter generator designs. Demonstrators were also installed for combined heat and power (CHP) for the building, a PV solar test range, a thermal solar test facility, a flywheel energy storage plant and a machine for testing scale models of linear permanent magnet generators.* University R&D SupervisionThe linear test rig and two virtual power supply network emulators were designed, built and commissioned by university researchers from Newcastle and Durham universities. I was responsible for budget allocation and progress reporting on these R&D projects.* Blade Test Facility completion and put to workI was tasked with leading the completion of Narec's first Blade Test Facility for static and dynamic testing of blades up to 70m in length. I was responsible under CDM for HS&E during the final stages of construction and commissioning as well as refining the code for the controllers for the static and dynamic tests and carrying out Narec's first commercial test programmes.
