Cultivated a strong and lean engineering organization and product for a Series A Health Insurance Advocacy startup and coordinated with leadership within the organization and externally with customers and partners to make sure we were solving the right problems with the best solutions. Initially engaged the company as a consultant for their first release before joining full-time as their Director of Engineering and then their CTO shortly after. Achievements include:- Hiring and mentoring a collection of backend, front end and dev ops engineers who continue to grow in their skills and responsibilities- Orchestrating the company's machine learning model to be production-ready by improving accuracy, fine-tuning, reducing features, and establishing an MLOps lifecycle and architecture capable of handling thousands of requests per day- Scaling out the product's application and cloud architecture into multiple services to ensure our solutions performed well within our SLAs even as customer activity grew 10x using AWS API Gateway and ECS Fargate- Improved cost efficiency by reducing Docker image size, tuning auto-scaling and using reserved instances in AWS wherever appropriate- Established meaningful processes for ensuring quality and productivity with participation from the rest of the engineering team, including code review guidelines, test plans, code linting, vulnerability scans, product release automation and end-to-end testing- Led the technical aspects of the company's first SOCII/HIPAA audit

First Data Architect hire for the North America AWS division of a large global consultancy.- Developed the initial go-to-market strategy for big data and machine learning, particularly in the manufacturing sector and IoT- Supported the sales team as a pre-sales engineer on prospective customer calls by drafting up rough architectural proposals and cost/time estimates- Delivered client work including multi-tenant AWS SaaS architecture designs as well as a PoC integrating onsite equipment using AWS IoT data tools, a time-series database, a web-based dashboard and Grafana to properly control and monitor the devices in near real-time.

Directed and grew the company's data platform and data engineering team from its beginning to twelve high-performing engineers across multiple teams. Wore many hats as the company grew from a Series A of 30 people to 300 Series C when I left. The data platform and team in particular were key to the company's success and was adopted for large health research initiatives involving Apple and many of the largest pharmaceutical companies.- Securely processed hundreds of Gigabytes from wearable and medical-grade sensors daily using cutting-edge technologies such as Apache Spark, Amazon EMR, and Airflow with Celery- Transformed ETL methods and machine learning feature creation into reusable libraries, allowing these high-value activities to be readily available for new data sources while reducing the initial development cost- Enabled data scientists to perform analysis on large-scale data sources using Jupyter notebooks easily and securely by providing them methods of accessing co-horts of data without managing their own clusters or spending time on ETL

Led several high-performing teams and managed a handful of junior and mid-level engineers for a Property Management SaaS which at the time was likely the largest Ruby-on-Rails codebase in the world.- Technical lead for the company's background, credit and eviction checks value-added service. This service was a critical need for most customers and accounted for 20% of the product's revenue during my tenure- Directed a successful large scale adaptation of the company's traditional rental market to also handle HOAs. We achieved this by clearly defining and testing our assumptions to reduce risk and fear, working in small pieces, involving other teams in our effort and rolling out experiments frequently. This achievement was highlighted in a quarterly earnings call and contributed to a 6% stock price increase

Designed and implemented a complex veterinary pathology data model into a digital web network that allows pathologists to share slide images and metadata among different laboratories. Architected and implemented a business rules-driven policy engine and researched its effects on adaptive data transfers and big data staging operations from the cloud in distributed workflows. Created BigTiler, a scalable imaging tool that converts very large proprietary virtual microscopy slides (40 GB+) into a common format that allows progressive rendering and graphical annotations on a flash-powered browser. Implemented a JavaScript front-end platform for medical applications to dynamically integrate with third-party RESTful Electronic Medical Records (EMR) services.
