Apr 2023 - Present

Director Of Signalling

Melbourne, Victoria, Australia

In 2019 I wanted a new challenge; an internal opportunity arose to become the MTM Signalling Engineering Manager, working for the Head of Engineering – Signalling. In this Role my responsibilities are wide and varied, I am responsible for the signalling facets of the following on the whole of the MTM network:• Maintaining and developing strategy/standards• Technology planning, production, and approval• Developing standardised solutions• Developing new signalling principles• Developing/managing competency systems and assessments• Developing/maintaining signalling process• Developing/maintaining training courseware content• Providing technical advice to Internal & External Stakeholders (SiD, RFI, workshops)• Technical investigation into HPI’s• Input/assess Waivers• Guiding major project developmentIn my time in this role, I have broadened my skill set significantly, I have had to develop my skill set to include a holistic understanding of how railways operate from all stakeholder perspectives including Operational, Network Safety, OCMS, and infrastructure stakeholders. I have also needed to develop my skill set to include a holistic understanding of full project life cycles from all stakeholder perspectives including Operational, Network Safety, OCMS, infrastructure, and project development/delivery/closeout stakeholders. This has been a period of significant personal growth, and of particular note my stakeholder management skills have been in a period of continuous improvement.

Apr 2019 - Apr 2023

Signalling Design Production Manager - Oce Signalling

Melbourne, Australia

Whilst working for MTM I was charged with starting and growing a team that would support MTM Infrastructure works for years to come, this was a very exciting role. I started and developed a team that within a few years was largely autonomous, process’ and skill sets were in place that meant minimum adjustments and management were required to maintain a constant and quality product.

Apr 2018 - Apr 2019

Senior Signalling Design & Review Engineer - Oce Signalling

In 2016 I was offered an opportunity to join MTM, the main Accredited Rail Transport Operator in Melbourne. It was an opportunity to join and help grow a team that would support the Melbourne Railway through an unprecedented period of investment.

Mar 2016 - Apr 2018

Senior Design Engineer

In 2012 I felt I needed a new opportunity and accepted a lead role for Parsons Brinkerhoff working on the largest Rail project in Melbourne. This was my first exposure to Joint Venture projects in lieu of turnkey projects, and again I needed to adapt quickly to thrive. This was a commercially aggressive project, and thus priorities and pressure had to be managed with great care. The project was successful and post completion I soon found myself heading up the Melbourne Signalling Design team. This role exposed me to business development, tendering, and high-level team leadership. It was a challenging time, and I needed strong support and advice to manage some difficult personnel issues withing the team, and a highly competitive market. This experience helped me develop a whole new set of skills.

Nov 2012 - Mar 2016

Senior Design Engineer/Amrp Circuit Design Team Leader

Invensys Rail Asia Pacific (Formerly Westinghouse Rail Systems Australia)

In 2010 I took a life-choice decision to migrate to Australia, and thus manufactured an opportunity to transfer internally from the Invensys York team to the Invensys Melbourne team.I look-back at this period as a time of great personal growth. I found the Melbourne Railway to be far less structured than my previous experiences and had to adapt to thrive in the new environment. Although this was not a significant step from a technical perspective, I found that there was a lot more expected from individuals from an allrounder perspective. Individuals are expected to take significant amounts of personal responsibility, and there are minimal support networks in place. I strengthened my interpersonal, management, planning, and organisational skills, and developed strong support networks with my peers in a short period of time to allow me to succeed in a team delivering large politically driven international projects.

Apr 2010 - Nov 2012

Senior Design Engineer/Assistant Team Leader

Invensys Rail Asia Pacific (Formerly Westinghouse Rail Systems Australia)

In 2006 I accepted a role at Westinghouse, I was given many opportunities including more advanced training and project roles. It was in this period that I developed many of the technical and leadership skills that a rely on today. This was in large due to checking opportunities on deliverables that previously I had only had design opportunities, and design opportunities including Scheme, Control table, and Data packages as part of a team that delivered end-to-end projects.I was also given leadership responsibilities at this juncture in my development.

2006 - 2010 ~4 yrs

Assistant Designer

Jarvis Rail, Doncaster Uk

In 2001 I joined the Railway at 18 years old as part of an apprenticeship scheme, I was employed as part of the Signalling Design team, but completed a rotation including Signalling Design, Signalling Installation, Signalling Testing, and Civil Design. On completion of the rotation, I returned to my core role and continued my development within the Signalling Design team.
