The company I worked for, known by its Army name as 1st BATTALION, 79th FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT, has a mission of transforming thousands of civilian volunteers into disciplined, motivated and fit Soldiers in order to provide the Army with competent and confident warfighters willing to live the Army Values. I was proud to lead this great company (known as a "Battalion") for two years, having been selected by the US Army. The leaders inside this organization are some of the Army's finest. If you ever had a relative or friend join the Army, he or she was forged as a Soldier by a Drill Sergeant. Our company had over 70 Drill Sergeants, and they knew who they were, and what they were about. They put no less than 18 hours a day instructing, leading, and mentoring our newest recruits in the fundamentals of being a US Army Soldier. Talk about dedication! They gave of themselves so that the US Army would have quality Soldiers to sustain its mission.Our company had six departments that primarily carried out the program of instruction. I was responsible for resourcing, directing, and providing overall guidance to each company. I ensured standards were upheld. When some folks think of a Drill Sergeant, the image the conjure is of a mean, big, and very loud Soldier who breaks down recruits. Although elements of that description may apply, they are professional instructors who know their trade. The stress they create is by design and is very effective in the development of a new recruit. By learning to cope with the stress and focus on the task on hand, recruits will gain a confidence that will serve them on today's chaotic battlefield. Drill Sergeants don't break recruits down. I enjoy mentoring others and developing organizations and helping them become better, as well as I love learning and being mentored. My job as a staff development manager was absolutely fantastic. The job at the US Army's Mission Command Training Program was rewarding in that it enhanced my ability to think critically, and deepened my passion for learning and teaching. The US Army created an organization called the Mission Command Training Program, known in Army circles as MCTP. MCTP serves as an engine of change for implementing doctrine by providing feedback to the Army on future doctrine, unit organization and application of that doctrine. MCTP's annual collection of key observations made at large organizational levels enables the Army's future force to grow and develop from lessons learned. As an example, during 2016, MCTP trained and developed the headquarters staff for 15 Army organizations which were each led by either a 3-star General, 2-star General, or Colonel. Our mode of training centered on a week of seminars, followed by two weeks of a computer generated simulation that exercised the decision-making of the organization. Each exercise generally required a one-year planning cycle including multiple training and planning events to enable training in execution.As part of my responsibilities, I led a team of four to six cross-functional team consultants in direct support of analyzing the training needs for specialized organizations. I had a fantastic team, and loved my time at MCTP. I not only was able to teach and mentor the originations we trained, but I learned so much as well. My teammates were fantastic to work with, and several went on to have a distinguished Army career, and continue to serve. So you might be wondering what is "Mission Command?" Ask me about it. The pinnacle for an operations manager for an Army Officer with 10-15 years of experience, is the Operations Officer (known in Army lingo as the "S3"). I held this position in an organization that traces its heritage to an Army company founded by Alexander Hamilton in 1776...1st Battalion, 5th Field Artillery Regiment. This storied organization fought in all but one of our country's major wars, from the Revolutionary War through today's global war on terror. I was the principle staff officer for all matters concerning training development, plans and operations, and modernization for our 300+ Soldier organization with a global mission of supporting US national interests. During my time as the Operations Officer, our organization reorganized, growing from approximately 100 to 300 Soldiers. and was given a new mission in anticipation for a deployment to Iraq. A large part of this reorganization required creating and developing new teams from scratch, conducting extensive training on new equipment, updating standard operating procedures, and deploying the entire organization oversees and back. Our mission overseas was very successful due to our focused training, and the exceptional Soldiers and leaders in our organization. This job was very fulfilling professionally, and personally. The results of hard work and efforts paid huge dividends in the most stressful environment a Soldier could experience - armed conflict. My daily interaction with Iraqi officials, the negotiation tactics employed during our joint planning sessions, and our multi-national missions conducted together enhanced my own skills. We were able to maintain peace in and around one of the strategic cities in Iraq. I think the training plan our team developed had a lot to do with our success.

Principal planning manager for planning future operations to attain organizational long-range goals for a 3,500-employee organization. I served as the project management lead for organizational restructuring in support of an emerging mission. I enjoyed the challenge of creating a training plan that supported new equipment fielding, a rapid growth of over 2,000 Soldiers, relocation to newer facilities, and the individual and collective team training associated with this restructuring. Our team helped the organizational leaders understand the changing environment so they could visualize how they would soon lead our organization through. I was fortunate that I was able to see the positive results our team enabled through our plan, and even helped to execute that plan as part of my next job within the organization.

I served as an Advisor to a senior human resources manager for border enforcement organization. I was part of a US Army endeavor to help train and assist Iraqi governmental organizations (more specifically their military forces) so that the Iraqi Government could secure a hard earned peace after an eventual US Army withdrawal. Our team helped to develop their internal processes and procedures for hiring, training, and sustaining (to include payroll) of their personnel.I specifically trained the Human Resources Officer and staff personnel of an Iraqi Department of Border Enforcement Brigade, among other military related tasks associated with my Army training. I considered this job as one of my most rewarding assignments in the Army for the simple reason that our team made a difference over the course of one year, and because of the bond we created with Soldiers of an entirely different culture than ours.

What a job! I enjoyed the opportunity to lead a group of over 70 Soldiers with a mission of supporting the US Army Field Artillery School. More specifically, our team of fantastic men and women enabled the Field Artillery School train thousands of future Soldiers in their specific skill set. Ask me how we did this. I would love to explain the intricacies of how filed artillery Soldiers enable the US Army win. Our organization had to be precise and timely in our tasks so much that we continually trained to hone in our skills. Of all the 40+ field artillery organizations in the US Army, our organization was the best in technical field artillery skills. This is not bravado, but an acknowledgement of the hard work and dedication of the Soldiers I led, and amount of time spent training on our technical skills.

Another fantastic job! I thoroughly enjoyed this Army assignment simply for the fact that it was a very tough skill that we taught for the US Field Artillery School. The camaraderie we enjoyed as instructors was icing on the cake.I specifically taught six, 6-month cohorts during my time as an instructor, and at one point teaching two cohorts at the same time. My role was simple; teach the physics and mechanics of gunnery to new Army officers. Gunnery is known in US Field Artillery circles as the toughest skill to master. Although subjective as that may be, teaching the skill certainly required a detailed and methodical approach, with a lot of patience.The reward for successfully finishing this job was that it prepared me for very well for my next assignment.

I learned a lot from serving as the Human Resources Manager along with a team of 7 Soldiers that served 400+ leaders and Soldiers of 4th Battalion, 27th Field Artillery Regiment. I ensured that we filed regulatory monthly reports on time, managed personnel promotions, and oversaw routine administrative actions. I was fortunate to even plan the Order of St. Barbara Military Ball (a formal celebration). Most of all, I learned what it takes to put the customer (Soldier) first!

My first "job" as a Field Artilleryman! After school, I was fortunate to serve overseas, and in Germany of all places! What a fantastic initiation into the Army. Not only did I lead some of the best Soldiers in the Army, but we also deployed to Kosovo to keep the peace between to fighting factions. And, to top it off, we worked alongside of the Russian Army. I had to learn real fast how to cooperate with a foreign entity during our joint operations. Not many 20-somethings straight out of college are placed on a border checkpoint with Soldiers from another country, and charged with keeping the peace and maintaining the International Security Zone! All I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed my time and the Soldiers that made it all possible. Some of us are friends to this day! And to top it off, the personal travel to eleven countries made one large international impression on me: UK, France, Italy, Austria, Sweden, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Belgium, Netherlands, Majorca (Spain) & Luxembourg. Why I never went to Switzerland is beyond me!

I learned how to make sense of topography, ballistics, logistics management, maintenance, and operations management. What a beginning to a long and rewarding career as a Field Artilleryman. My first "Army job" was a recruiter for the Military Science Department at Missouri State University (back then called Southwest Missouri State University - SMSU). I have been blessed with a great Army career, and it all started at SMSU. Newly commissioned in May of 1998, I served our ROTC department by actively recruiting high quality candidates into our program. I planned and developed my own schedule that gave me the best opportunities to visit with prospective students - both in college and high school. I learned that a good, honest pitch that stressed the benefits of an Army officer career could entice the right student of character. I am glad that in some small way I was able to add to the legacy of the SMSU "Bear Battalion."
