He helped to improve the software quality by focusing on usability and paths through the system, while interfacing with the development team on design issues and test strategy.
Mr. Speck was requested to manage the test process for a new computer music software venture from IBM Research, Music Sketcher, giving users the ability to create music with musical blocks rather than notation. He managed the test process in an iterative development model, and implemented a defect tracking system, documented the test process and created use cases. His role quickly expanded to also manage the build process, create the installation package, create basic automation for demos, and team with marketing to implement focus groups of both children and adults and process their feedback.
Mr. Speck was part of the support staff that assisted IBM Research personnel with workstation, network and software issues. His Windows expertise made him a valuable source as the lab moved away from OS/2, and his high customer satisfaction caused many to specifically request his support when problems arose. Because of his abilities to adapt quickly, Mr. Speck was requested to roll out the installation of SAP for the Research accounting staff, and accomplished this with minimal impact to the staff.
Led testing of a new IBM venture into edutainment software with KidRiffs, released commercially in April 1995 as a musical exploration product for children ages five through ten. In addition to testing with a focus on how children use the computer interface, he also provided input to the artists and technical writers, coordinated the Midi device testing in Raleigh and provided product demonstrations in local schools and business expositions.
Mr. Speck led a team of three programmers in improving the worldwide service parts forecast, moving from straight line historical methods to geometric trends. He provided custom parts forecasts and financial data used in negotiations with third-party suppliers, sales and asset recovery services. In addition, David helped improve the operating environment with one-on-one system help and education.
