Dr. David A. Spinner began his interest in musculoskeletal sonography during his rehabilitation medicine training. After performing numerous anatomic (blind) injections for a variety of musculoskeletal pathologies, he observed that some patients responded well to injections and other patients received no benefit. Hoping to understand this discrepancy, he purchased a book on how to perform proper anatomic injections. However, the accuracy of these injections was still questionable. It became quite obvious that with ultrasound we can literally see our intended target and guide the injectate with real time visualization. Dr. Spinner then initiated multiple ultrasound research projects and became one of the first physicians nationwide to become certified in musculoskeletal ultrasonography. He also writes questions for the national certification examination. Dr. Spinner went on to complete his fellowship in pain medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard University. He also wrote and edited a textbook, Atlas of Ultrasound Guided Musculoskeletal Injections with two of his mentors from Mount Sinai Hospital.
