Innovative researcher and scientific administrator with fourteen years of management experience in the federal government and private sector. As head of the viral genomics group at the J. Craig Venter Institute, was instrumental in developing and supervising the influenza, coronavirus, rotavirus and rhinovirus genome sequencing projects. While Chief of the Viral Respiratory Diseases Section at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, oversaw the extramural research program for influenza and coronaviruses through the development, review and management of contract and grant initiatives. Worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), extramural researchers and industry partners to develop influenza and coronavirus countermeasures, with a special focus on bringing universal influenza candidates to clinical trial. As Director of the Division of International Epidemiology and Population Studies at the Fogarty International Center, works with domestic and international government and non-governmental organizations to build a global genomic epidemiology network for epidemic and pandemic preparedness through training initiatives (e.g. SARS-CoV-2 variant tracking and regional infectious disease surveillance). Manages a team of epidemiologists, genomics and implementation scientists using large-scale demographic, economic, environmental, genomic and geographic datasets to analyze, visualize and better understand the disease dynamics of epidemics with implications for U.S. health.
