My role principally involves tailored, continuous management of financial investments for long-term relationship clients on either a discretionary or advisory basis - investment advice and investment management services for wealthy private clients, charitable trusts and iwi-related entities. A corollary to the private banking style service we offer (and my background in investment banking) is active involvement in facilitating and promoting private capital raisings and non-prospectus investments for/to certified wholesale investors - including bespoke portfolio construction to integrate private equity, private direct, and unlisted commercial property and agriculture assets into private wealth client portfolios, where appropriate and applicable. I moved into private wealth investment management in 2005 from a background in mergers & acquisitions and investment banking, having worked for Credit Suisse First Boston from university and then as an in-house M&A manager at Fonterra Group, New Zealand's largest company.Forsyth Barr is one of New Zealand's largest independent securities firms - one of the original stockbroking firms. That said, the relationship that we have with many of our clients is far more encompassing - acting as a trusted financial advisor and confidante, rather than merely their stockbroker or discretionary investment manager. Working closely as an investment advisory team with English private banker Robin Ward, we offer a bespoke wealth management service, tailored to the individual but grounded in a thematic, top-down approach to investment & risk management. Many of our clients these days are charitable and not-for-profit organisations, and we also have extensive experience advising returning ex-pats and migrant visa applicants to design tax-efficient and rule-compliant portfolios for these families.An area that we take some pride in is our ability to understand the "big picture": this has been central to our investment management success across business cycles. In November 2009 I was fortunate to be awarded the CFA Society New Zealand Forecaster of the Year, recognition of our capability in this sphere.
