PromoterFriars Aylesbury Ltd Jun 1969 - PresentWith over 90,000 members Friars Aylesbury is the biggest music club in Europe. It was very active from 1969 to 1984 where it was closely associated with David Bowie, The Clash, The Ramones, Genesis, Queen, Mott the Hoople, The Jam, Blondie, U2 and Marillion amongst many others. It closed in 1984 but only temporarily. In 2009 like a phoenix rising from the ashes Friars Aylesbury recommenced presenting shows in Aylesbury first at The Civic Centre and then at Aylesbury's Waterside Theatre. Recent concerts include Paul Weller, Stiff Little Fingers, The Specials, Steve Hackett, Marillion, Camel, Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets, Steve Hillage, Gong, The Vaccines, King Crimson, Holy Holy and Erasure. In 2016 a campaign was started to create the world's first statue of David Bowie in Aylesbury after his untimely death in January 2016.Bowie performed the world debut of both 'Hunky Dory' and 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars' at Friars Aylesbury. David Stopps was with him in the Friars dressing room when he formed The Spiders in September 1971. A Kickstarter Campaign was run in November 2016 with a goal of £100K. The final amount pledged was £115K. The statue was unveiled on 25 March 2018 under the arches in Aylesbury Market Square. You can see a live webcam feed here www.earthlymessenger.org.
