My responsibilities were for Radio broadcast equipment and communication including routing FM broadcasts from external sites back to NG and then on to Alice Springs for rebroadcast across the internet. I also managed 14 media centres where each had computer and FM Radio broadcast services for the local people to enable them to learn new skills and allow them to communicate with the rest of the world for financial and educational services. I was also responsible for data backup including the archive of media that was the only history in many cases that the Yarnangu people. The work at NG Media was very rewarding but its remote desert location made everything difficult to manage. Spare parts were a two week wait then a an 800km drive to collect them, a fault at a media centre could mean a 3 day trip. This was an opportunity of a lifetime which I embraced however, it all came to an end due to staff safety concerns and management closed down the centre. Show less

Serving approximately 140 research and 20 administration staff located within 2 buildings and an IT staff of 2, this was a very challenging role with lots of upgrades required immediately. Within the first 2 days of my starting we had a major file server outage and worryingly discovered that there was no working backup system in place. I implemented a new file storage server and introduced Dell Equalogic NAS system with a CommVault Simpana backup, recovery and archiving solution up and fully functioning within the first month after also discovering that staff were deleting files to save newer ones as there was no spare disk storage space. I upgraded and standardised desktops to a single fully supported solution with the latest Windows 7 OS fully integrated to the University of Melbourne's Microsoft network infrastructure of which this organisation was a part of. I implemented a network desktop anti virus solution and introduced single sign on for many applications. Within IT, we designed and introduced a new desktop security policy which included the strengthening of passwords and frequency of their change. I implemented Share-point Services and employed a new SQL Administrator to bolster the IT team and manage the thousands of databases that were created by research staff.I was part of the project team that introduced the VERN network into the Eye and Ear Hospital allowing the Centre for Eye Research and the Bionic Ear Institute to utilise a much faster 1.5 Gigabit and more reliable system removing the requirement for a leased 100 Megabit fibre link to the ST Vincent's hospital creating a saving of $45,000 per annum. There was no server infrastructure available, only desktops and it relied fully on external USB HDD's for backups and file storage. Some departments had employed their own IT staff and were 'doing their own thing'. IT consisted of a team of 4 which mainly provided 1st line support. With a very limited budget, we managed to introduce some network infrastructure with file storage and SQL servers with a 24TB disk array. Backup & recovery was introduced utilising a new 2 drive, 24 slot tape library. File migration was started and the valuable disk data moved onto the new system. Show less
