In 1981 I founded Daavlin to manufacture and distribute phototherapy equipment for the treatment of psoriasis. Initially designed to use in conjunction with Psoralen drugs, phototherapy devices provided the light (ultraviolet in the UVA spectrum) that activated the medication. I have spent the thirty years since contributing to our industry primarily through the development of devices that are more efficient, safer and more intuitive to use. The innovation that put us on the map was the development of “smart” software programs that minimized or eliminated the chance of operator error. Our strategy to market these devices worldwide, even to small markets that are often ignored by classically large medical device and pharmaceutical companies, has resulted in help for millions of people, not only in the US but in the far reaches of the world.My personal philosophy was to develop a strong, competent staff at Daavlin, and then stay out of the way and let them do their jobs. This gives me the opportunity to focus on the long-term strategy of the company: Thinking about new products, refining the existing line and cultivating relationships that provide inroads for new markets. In essence I am the company cheerleader-in-chief.This has proven to be successful. For years, we have enjoyed regular 10 to 15% annual growth. We have the resources to continue our large annual investment in research and development and marketing. Our privately held status permits us to make changes and try new things in a relatively short period of time. My goal is to see the company’s reputation grow as a premiere medical device manufacturing company and a premiere place to work.
