Economic Recovery Corps (Erc) Fellow
Launched in 2023 through a $30 million cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration (EDA), the ERC Fellowship is designed to build capacity in some of the hardest-hit and most economically distressed areas across the United States while cultivating the next generation of economic development leaders. The first cohort of 65 Fellows and Host sites represents practitioners and leaders with the passion, skills, and vision to advance new ways of doing economic development over the course of 30 months. I am one of the inaugural 65 fellows and have been matched with the City and County of Honolulu's Office of Economic Revitalization to create a Startup Business Support (SBS) pilot program and respond to the community's demand for empowering leaders, fostering small business entrepreneurship, and moving away from a tourism-dependent economy. By focusing on underrepresented minorities and individuals with limited English proficiency or immigrant status, the SBS will diversify and strengthen the local economy, particularly for disadvantaged populations. It will support entrepreneurs from these backgrounds, helping them start businesses and access valuable networks. The project seeks to build a more equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem, promoting economic resilience and prosperity for O'ahu's residents.
